Ponderings on Book Publishing, by C A Maggi

PART THREE8) Who should discover books that are being written today that may even be treasured in one
hundred years time, or even one thousand years from now?
Other publishers might still produce physical copies of books, whether fiction or non-fiction, the content of which has become known as "classics" of literature. Some of these books have been published many times before. Many out-of-copyright titles (and even some still with copyright) are now available for free as digital downloads. The publishers who still produce printed copies of such books might even have the resources to publish all sorts of other books, but where and how are today's quality ideas being found and nurtured in the current publishing environment? What is a quality idea? 9) Who should seek out the great writers and find them an
appreciative audience?
Educators, librarians, booksellers and media personnel have the main responsibility for promoting great books of universal value. They have the opportunity to encourage the public to learn more about the ideas contained within publications. Book groups and book clubs can assist the process, too. Publishers are merely the bridge between those who promote books and those who write them. Which publishers today are finding the great authors of (and for) tomorrow? 10) What value do you place on ideas? Most writers
forget that they are never paid to write. Writing is merely a
pastime when it is a means of personal expression. Publishing is
a privilege.
Writers are sometimes paid to provide something people want to read. The reader may be an employer and the employee or contractor is paid to provide information. The reader may, alternatively, be a private person who just wants something entertaining to read as a diversion from the routine of their lives. Such a reader may or may be willing to pay for the work of a particular author. Readers may be students who use an author's work as a tool in their education. These readers may not even enjoy the content, or only reluctantly purchase the book. Many other seekers of information, entertainment and/or education do not pay directly for the work of a writer. The content is funded by advertising revenues or governments directly or indirectly provide financial support. But the question here is: What value do you place on ideas?
